A 21-year-old mother has died after saving her 12-day-old daughter from a house fire by dropping the baby’s car seat from an upstairs window.

US newspaper, the Journal Star, reports that brave mum Shelby Carter strapped her newborn daughter Keana into her car seat and dropped the twelve-day-old baby from an upstairs window of their Wyoming home, in order to save her from the flames engulfing the house.

County Sheriff investigator Steve Sloan says that the tragic mum was pronounced dead at 1:02PM after firefighters found her body in an upstairs bedroom of the two-story house. It is not yet clear how the fatal fire began.

Shelby’s daughter Keana was transferred to hospital and is reported to be doing well,

“The good news is, the baby got home and is doing great.”

Firefighters who battled the blaze released a statement via their Facebook page regarding the tragedy,

“Words can not describe what has happened within our community today. We have experienced a feeling that no department wants to go through.

Words can not express the way we truly feel. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family involved.”

Shelby, who was studying to be a pharmacy technician, was buried yesterday. She is survived by her daughter, Keana Raiyne Davis and her fiancé, DeShawn Davis. The young mum’s family said children were her passion,

“She loved every child she came in contact with and they loved her. Her greatest moment was becoming a mom.”
