Muireann O’Connell describes the controversy over skorts row as the ‘most banal issue’

Irish TV presenter Muireann O’Connell called out The Camogie Association over the ongoing skorts debate.

The Kilkenny and Dublin teams planned a protest at the Leinster semi-final and refused to wear skorts. The players went onto the pitch wearing shorts instead of the regulatory skorts.

The protest was made to call attention to changing regulations regarding sports attire, by allowing players to either wear shorts instead of skorts or have the choice.

At the match, players were told to change back into skorts, otherwise their match would be called off. Players were made to change back into skorts to play.

Dublin captain Aisling Maher posted to Instagram, expressing her disappointment:

“It’s 2025, society has changed and our game needs to catch up.”

The protest has caused a heated debate with many Irish media figures speaking out about the issue, including Muireann O’Connell.

Muireann O’Connell spoke out about the issue on Instagram after the Munster camogie final was postponed over the unresolved skorts issue.

“This is THE MOST STUPID and banal issue in the world. The Camogie Association would want a big dose of cop on.”

According to The Irish Times, the Camogie Munster Council postponed the match “to avoid confrontation with players”.

Many supported O’Connell’s post, agreeing that players should be allowed to wear shorts.

The Gaelic Players Association released a report regarding the “attire standards” in camogie, which shared that 70% of players report discomfort while wearing skorts.

83% of players responded that they would either “prefer to wear shorts” or “should have the option to choose”.

On the 22nd May, a special congress will take place at Croke Park to “resolve the controversy”, RTÉ reports.
