A mother has claimed that her son caught a “flesh-eating” bug after swimming in Dublin’s Grand Canal during the good weather last week.
Rachel Sneedon, from Ringsend, told 98fm that she has had to take her child to hospital three times since last Saturday.
“The doctors told him to stay out of the water, that it was absolutely filthy and full of toxins,” she explained before adding that not everyone will get the bug.
“He could be the only one in a hundred kids that could catch that disease. It’s not every kid that will catch the disease”.
Apparently her son, who is in “serious pain” with the infection, was wearing a wetsuit during his swim. Last year, he also contracted an ear infection after going into the same waters.
Ms Sneedon, who warned her son on various occasions about swimming in the canal, said that she thinks a ban should be introduced.
