The Molly Malone statue is set to be restored
In a significant step towards preserving one of Dublin’s most beloved landmarks, the Dublin City Council has committed to restoring the iconic Molly Malone statue.
The statue’s discoloured bronze surface will be treated to ensure that Molly’s entire figure maintains a uniform patina, correcting the tarnishing caused by years of her breasts being over-touched by tourists.
A steward system will also be established on a pilot basis to prevent repeated damage.
This positive change comes in response to the ‘Leave Molly mAlone’ campaign.
The campaign was spearheaded by singer-songwriter Tilly Cripwell.
The musician called for greater respect towards the historic statue after witnessing tourists groping it.
The campaign highlighted the importance of treating cultural landmarks with care and setting positive social examples, urging visitors to appreciate Molly Malone’s enduring legacy without unsavoury physical behaviour.
Dublin City Council are fully aware that the Molly Malone statue is a cherished symbol of Dublin.
They are keen to maintain her dignity and integrity.
The DCC will ensure that this iconic statue remains in pristine condition for years to come.
Campaigner Tilly Cripwell responds to the news
The news was greatly welcomed by Tilly Cripwell, who launched the campaign.
“This is a wonderful victory for Dublin’s heritage. Molly Malone deserves to be admired and respected. I’m thrilled that the Dublin City Council has taken action.
“I hope that visitors will continue to appreciate her in a way that preserves her legacy and sets good social examples to future generations.”
Tilly continues to call on the DCC to elevate the statue onto a higher plinth.
