Met Eireann issues weather warning for three counties ahead of thundery weekend

Sophie Collins

Here we go again…

Met Eireann has issued a status yellow rain warning for three counties ahead of some heavy rainfall, thunderstorms and potential flooding.

The weather alert is in place for Donegal, Leitrim and Sligo and will be in effect from 9:00 am on Saturday to midnight on Sunday.

The forecaster has advised that the public should expect: “Frequent heavy showers on Saturday which may lead to localised flooding.”

Ahead of this unwelcome change in conditions once again, today is set to remain dry with just a few scattered showers.

As for the rest of the weekend, here is what the Irish forecaster is predicting as of July 28th:

Saturday

Saturday will be a blustery day with sunny spells and showers.

Some of the showers will be heavy, especially across the north and northwest with the potential for localised flooding and the chance of lightning here.

It will be driest and mildest in the southeast. Highest temperatures of 16 to 20 degrees Celsius with brisk westerly winds.

Scattered showers will continue overnight, remaining heaviest in the northwest with drier intervals elsewhere. Lowest temperatures of 12 to 14 degrees in mainly moderate westerly winds.

Sunday

A cloudy but dry start for most areas, although a few showers will continue, mainly in Ulster.

By midday, more persistent outbreaks of rain will then begin pushing in from the west, gradually extending across the country through the afternoon and evening.

Maximum temperatures of 16 to 20 degrees in mainly moderate west to southwest winds.

Widespread outbreaks of rain or drizzle will continue through the night. Quite humid with lowest temperatures of 14 to 16 degrees in light to moderate southwesterly breezes.
