Mandatory inspections in Berkeley have revealed that some 400 buildings are in need of “serious” repairs.

Following the tragic balcony collapse which claimed the lives of six Irish students, the Berkeley housing authority has released an alarming report which states that 402 of the 2,200 buildings in Berkeley need to undergo repairs.

The report stated that 402 of the buildings inspected “raised significant safety concerns” due to moisture or water damage.

Twenty-eight per cent of the city’s multi-unit building owners did not respond to requests to carry out inspections, so the number of buildings with impaired safety could be “much higher”.

Olivia Burke, Eoghan Culligan, Lorcán Miller, Niccolai Schuster, Eimear Walsh and Ashley Donohue lost their lives in June when the balcony collapsed at a 21st birthday party.

The families of the survivors and those killed are suing 35 companies through the California courts for damages following the accident.
