Danielle McLaughlin, who was from Donegal, was found dead in Goa back in March 2017.
Vikat Bhagat was found guilty of the rape and murder and while prosecutors asked for him to be sentenced to death, he was sentenced to life imprisonment instead.
He also received a second life term for rape and another three years for the destruction of evidence.
Responding to the sentencing, McLaughlin's family solicitor, Des Doherty said that it was a "very difficult process over many years".
He told BBC: "For Andrea, [Danielle's mother] the road to truth and justice has been a very long and very difficult one.
"She has had a lot of help and assistance from both the British and Irish consulate staff, as well as Mr Verma."
He described the outcome as a 'real success'.
