Apparently it’s hard to know when a kangaroo is pregnant. We suspect it’s even harder when the zoo staff presume its resident kangaroo is a male.
Kangaroo Chuck, who was originally thought to be male, has given birth in a Siberian zoo. Staff only became aware of the birth when the joey appeared from Chuck’s pouch.
Kangaroos, which are said to be about the size of a cherry when they are born, can spend several months in their mother’s pouch before they start venturing out. The joey was roughly six inches in size when discovered by zoo keepers on March 22nd.
A spokesperson for Barnaul Zoo told the BBC:
“It has a lovely face and a beautiful little tail. Because birth for kangaroos is a very mysterious and long process, it went unnoticed by staff zoo”.
Director for the zoo, Sergey Pisarev has confirmed they’ll now be renaming Chuck as soon as they decide on a name for their surprise visitor.
