Christian Brückner, the main suspect in the Madeleine McCann case, is set to be released from prison in the coming days.
Local authorities have confirmed that Brückner will be released from prison on September 17th.
The 48-year-old is currently serving time after being found guilty of raping a 72-year-old American tourist.
According to reports, he has requested police protection following his release from prison next week.
"The defense has contacted the Lower Saxony Ministry of Justice to request appropriate measures in the interest of our client's safety and the maintenance of order within the facility," Brückner's lawyer said as per The Sun.
The suspect has always denied any involvement in the disappearance of Madeleine McCann.
Madeleine has not been seen alive since she disappeared from Praia da Luz in May 2007. Madeleine was only three years old at the time of her disappearance.
Officers have never charged Christian Brückner with her disappearance or murder, but stressed that he is under investigation.
German prosecutors named Christian Brückner as the main suspect in the Madeleine McCann case in 2020.
However, he has never been charged in connection with the case.
German prosecutors have evidence that claims he was in the area when Madeleine McCann went missing.
According to a report by the BBC, prosecutors have called for restrictions to be put in place when Brückner is released from prison.
They fear he will commit further crimes and believe these restrictions are necessary. They will be agreed upon in a court hearing, but it will not be open to the public.
