They took in a female refugee last month.
Tánaiste Leo Varadkar and his partner Matt Barrett are sharing their Dublin home with a Ukrainian refugee.
Earlier this year, the Tánaiste had said his partner had registered the two’s interest in terms of taking in a Ukrainian person fleeing the country after it was invaded by Russia.
Now, The Irish Daily Mail reports that on Tuesday (14 June), Varadkar confirmed that he and Barrett had welcomed a female refugee into their new home in Dublin 6 last month.
Speaking in March, Varadkar said that he and Barrett would be happy to take someone from Ukraine into their home “for at least six months”.
“Matt owns the house, so he registered with the Red Cross about three weeks ago,” he stated at the time.
“We wouldn’t have been able to do that in the past but we have a house now and we have a spare room.
“I know people are keen to welcome people from Ukraine into their homes. We’re happy to do that too, for at least six months.”
Speaking on The Pat Kenny Show on Wednesday, the Tánaiste said he would not confirm any additional details about the female refugee as she is a “private individual” but said that the experience is “going very well”.
“I really feel for what people in Ukraine are experiencing. This is a small thing that we can do to help out and we’re happy to do it,” he added.
