Lend A Hand – Four Great Irish Causes To Get Behind This Week

These Irish causes need your help.

Every week in the Her.ie offices we are inundated with requests from people asking us to help them promote their charity events. While every cause is worthwhile, unfortunately we can’t get around to all of them and so for that reason, we have decided to put together some of these events from around the country. Every week, we will feature five events you should get behind or get involved with over the next few months. There are tonnes of amazing organisations in this country, let’s help them out.

The Donal Parsons Trust Concert with Shane Filan

Donal Parsons is a six year old boy who lives in Strandhill, Country Sligo, Ireland with his big brother James, his mum Jane, his dad Andy and Nelly the Springer Spaniel. Donal likes playing, dancing, talking, cooking and making things. In October 2013 Donal was diagnosed with Stage 4 Neuroblastoma, a very rare Children’s cancer. Donal is currently receiving 18 months of intensive treatment at Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital, Crumlin, Dublin.

The Donal Parsons Trust has been set up to raise money to access any viable treatments to prevent relapse and to pay for treatments if Donal does relapse. The Trust may also assist Donal and his family during his treatment. If Donal doesn’t need further treatment all proceeds will go towards fighting Neuroblastoma and to other families facing this terrible situation.

The Donal Parsons Trust is holding their biggest event to date – a concert featuring Shane Filan coming up on the 5th December at the Knocknarea Arena, IT Sligo! Tickets are on sale now for €35 (+ booking fee) and can be bought online here.

Beg Borrow and Steal: Escape to Edinburgh for the #LiveLife Foundation

To continue to raise funds and awareness for the Donal Walsh #LiveLife Foundation, Shauna McGrath and Tanya White are taking part in DCU’s Beg Borrow and Steal: Escape to Edinburgh campaign, which kicks off on November 21st.

The Donal Walsh #Livelife Foundation was set up by his family in order to bring forward his causes of providing age appropriate teenage facilities in hospital and hospice centres as well as promoting his anti-suicide message. #Livelife message.

The event sees 30 teams of 2 race from DCU to the finishing destination (Edinburgh) via 2 UK checkpoints within 24 hours and without spending any money – simply relying on the kindness of strangers!  The girls are looking for sponsorship and fundraising towards their team ‘The Kilt Seekers’, which can be done online here. Cash donations are also accepted and any little helps! 100% of donations will go to the Donal Walsh #Livelife Foundation.

Pampers 1 Pack = 1 Life-Saving Vaccine Campaign

During October – December 2014, Pampers have teamed up with UNICEF to protect women of child-bearing age and pregnant women in the developing world against tetanus. For each Pampers – UNICEF pack purchased, Pampers will donate the cost of one tetanus vaccine to support UNICEF in the fight against MNT. During the month of the campaign, you can also help get behind the cause by simply watching one of their online films that celebrates first time moments of babies everywhere, many of them made healthy by a healthy start in life. By watching one video, Pampers and UNICEF will donate one vaccine to the campaign.

The online campaign encourages you to use social media to help you do your part with the click of a mouse.

Share a video with your friends and the teams will donate a second vaccine. Upload a photo of your baby experiencing their first cuddles, smiles or tastes to the Pampers Facebook page using #PampersUNICEF, and they will donate three life-saving vaccines.

Do you know a Person Of The Year?

Do you know an ‘Everyday Hero’? Do you want to thank them  on live television? The People of The Year Awards, in partnership with The Nicky Byrne Show with Jenny Greene on RTÉ 2fm, are looking for Ireland’s ‘Everyday Hero’. They’re looking for the ordinary person who does extraordinary things that really make the difference to their family, friends, neighbours or local community. Ireland’s ‘Everyday Hero’ can be any age, or any part of Ireland – they just need to be special!

To nominate your everyday hero, log on to peopleoftheyear.com or email [email protected]. Nominators will be brought on air to talk to Nicky and Jenny to tell everyone just why the person they are nominating is an ’Everyday Hero’.  All nominations will be considered by a special People of the Year Awards adjudication panel and will be announced live on the People of the Year Awards TV programme on RTÉ 1 on Saturday, 6th December 2014.
