Katie Taylor is such a bad ass. Not only is she an amazing athlete, she’s also a typical Irish woman and that’s why we love her so much.
Needless to say, we were thrilled to hear that Katie has been chosen to fly the flag for Ireland at the opening ceremony of the London Olympics this Friday. Awesome or what?
The Irish Sun reports that the girl with the golden gloves is set to lead out Ireland’s Olympic hopefuls in front of a global audience of over 1 billion people. So, like, no pressure or anything Katie…but make sure you don’t trip or fall like…
Katie, who is a four-time world champion, was officially confirmed as the Irish flag bearer by the Olympic Council of Ireland yesterday. According to reports, Katie was chosen over fellow boxer Paddy Barnes, who took home a bronze medal from the games in Beijing four years ago.
If, like us, you’re ridiculously excited to see Katie in action during the games, she will make her Olympic debut in the lightweight division of the Women’s Boxing competition on August 5th.
And Katie’s appearance will be super-important, not just because she’ll be kicking some serious behind for Ireland, but because she will be taking part in the first ever Olympic women’s boxing competition. Yes, it’s hard to believe that the sport was never a part of the games before.
Speaking about Katie, Tommy Murphy, the president of the Irish Amateur Boxing Association said:
“It’s a great honour for Irish amateur boxing and we are absolutely delighted that Katie has been chosen to be the flag bearer. She is the first female boxer to represent this country at the Olympic Games and it is a good choice.”
“Katie is a fantastic ambassador for our sport and her record in international competition speaks for itself,” he added.
We can’t wait to cheer Katie on when she takes to the ring. We have no doubt that she’ll do us proud. Ladies, will you be glued to your screens as well?
