Irish households have been given a warning to ‘never’ put one specific item in garden bins.
Although we’re in the depths of winter and the garden bin may not be full right now, it’s only a matter of time until the garden starts to catch up with you.
However, it’s worth bearing in mind that if this one item is in your bin already, you could be at risk of a fine up to €4000.
A spokesperson from My Home Improvements told the Galway Beo about that households should be careful when putting soil in their garden bins.
“It’s one of the most common mistakes we see,” they told the outlet.
“Soil might look natural, but it causes major issues for councils trying to turn garden waste into compost. Even a little bit can ruin a whole batch.”
Households can face fines of up to €4000 for the common mistake, if convicted in court.
Littering carries the €4000 fine, but if convicted of causing environmental pollution, fines can be even more, reaching up to €130,000 for on-the-spot fines.
