Ireland’s First Automated Red Light Camera Launched Today

The camera has been set up in Dublin city centre.

Ireland’s first automated red-light camera was installed today at the junction of Blackhall Place and Benburb Street in Dublin city centre.

This spot was chosen because there have been a number of crashes at this Luas junction and the new camera will pick up on any motorist who breaks a red light.

Earlier today, RTÉ reported that anyone caught breaking a red light will “automatically receive three penalty points and a fine of up to €120″.

The location of the new camera

The Luas was first introduced in 2004 and since then, there have been 338 crashes between cars and trams, with 95% happening on the Red line between Saggart and Tallaght.

Similar to a speed camera, this new camera, which is directly linked to An Garda Siochana’s PULSE system, will take a photo of any car caught breaking a red light.
