Ireland houses over 1.5 million pigs, according to figures released by the Central Statistics Office (CSO) today.
The figures revealed that there are more pigs in Ireland than there are people in Dublin after figures revealed that 1,570,000 pigs are housed in the country.
The majority of the animals are housed in huge farms where the pig populations are greater than most of Ireland’s biggest cities.
The statistics show that 92 per cent of the pigs live on 327 specialised farms.
There was an increase of 1.4 per cent from the same time last year.
The Irish may love their rashers but our pig population is nothing compared to the Germans who house a whopping 27.4 million pigs.
