The state of New York has declared a state of emergency after an enormous blizzard hit the country.

The blizzard wreaked havoc on thousands of people and homes across the state and elsewhere in the north west with heavy winds and snow.

According to reports, 1,800 snowploughs along with 2,400 personnel were deployed to try and cope with the storm.

Travel bans have also been imposed and the subways are offering limited services, with many other services completely suspended.

The ban states that only emergency vehicles will be allowed on the roads after 11pm.

“If you are in your car and you are on any road, town, village, city, it doesn’t matter, after 11 o’clock, you will technically be committing a crime,” said Governor Andrew Cuomo.

“It could be a matter of life and death so caution is required.”

Boston has also been affected, with a number of flights into Logan International Airport diverted and cancelled.

Aer Lingus flights to New York and Boston have all been cancelled today while passengers are being urged to check with their airline before travelling to Irish airports for their flight.
