It’s only 48 days to Christmas, have you started shopping yet?
Here at Her.ie we firmly back our girl Mairead Farrell who says we should all be taking the pressure off this Christmas, but if you are planning on gift shopping, we’ve got one great suggestion that will help you make a difference as well as telling someone you love that you’re thinking of them…
ActionAid Ireland today launched eleven wonderful ‘Gifts in Action’, gifts will change lives of many families in the developing world for generations to come.
There are eleven gifts to choose from including the gift of a goat that could provide food and an income for a family in Malawi through ActionAid Ireland’s goat-breeding scheme. As well as the gift of a head start. This gift will open a new chapter in a girl’s life by giving her the opportunity to go to school and providing her with everything she needs including uniforms, books, lunches and other expenses to get an education and build a future career.
Wouldn’t it be a nice feeling to buy a gift that could change a life forever?
Sharon Ni Bheoláin, co-anchor on RTÉ’s Six One News and, award-winning journalist, is ActionAid Ireland’s Ambassador and today helped launch the ‘Gifts in Action’ campaign.
Sharon recently travelled to Malawi with ActionAid Ireland’s CEO Olga McDonogh to review progress on their Women’s Right Projects in Rumphi, Chitipa and Salima. Common problems for women in Malawi are violence and abuse, land grabbing and early girl marriage. ActionAid Ireland works closely with community based women’s groups to:
- Train women’s rights leaders of these groups to work within their communities to break the cycle of domestic violence and teach women how to reduce their vulnerability to HIV and AIDS.
- Give girls the opportunity to go to school.
- Increase women’s access to and control over land.
