Be on your guard this festive season.

Today, December 8, often tends to be one of the busiest shopping days of the year in Ireland; it being the day, of course, when country folk descend on the capital to do their Christmas shopping.

It is perhaps fitting then, that today also marks ‘Retail Safety Day’ as the Gardaí seek to raise awareness amongst both retailers and members of the public to avoid becoming a victim of crime during the busiest shopping period of the year.

Figures from the Garda Analysis Service reveal, for example, that the cost of shoplifting in 2015 was €255 million and €55 million at Christmas time alone.

Furthermore, over 50 thefts from cars per month occurred at retail car parks in 2015; the peak months for incidents were August and December and €600 was the average value stolen per incident.

More figures about the effect of theft on retailers and the public are available here; An Garda Síochána, meanwhile, have issued the following advice to the public to stay vigilant when shopping and going on nights out over the festive season.

Safe Parking

  1. Secure all car doors, close all windows and set your alarm.
  2. Double check the doors are locked.
  3. Don’t leave property on display. Take all valuable property with you.
  4. Park in well-lit and secure areas.
  5. Report all thefts.

Safe Shopping & Nights Out

  1. Plan your night out, how are you getting there and how are you getting back?
  2. Let someone know where you are going and when you are coming back.
  3. Avoid walking alone and in dark places.
  4. Never attempt to reason with drunk or aggressive people.
  5. Streetwise; be wary of your surroundings and mind your property.
