A former employee of the HSE has been dealt a rather unusual deal this week.
According to The Irish Examiner, the HSE overpaid the employee by €191,225 over the course of eight years.
The employee, who has now retired, has been given a repayment deal whereby they have 561 years to pay the money back.
Yes, you did read that right – 561 years.
It has been reported that the error occurred when the employee continued to receive full pay from 2002 up until their retirement in 2010. However, during this period, their hours had been reduced.
Other overpayments were also recorded, with the audit showing overpayments elsewhere to the tune of €85,865, €55,529 and €46,373.
In fact, there were 1,144 overpayments made in the last 14 years, with 41 of these worth more than €10,000 in value.
The news was announced at the internal payroll audit.
It was also noted that only 37 per cent of employees had notified the HSE that they were being overpaid.
Would you tell your boss if you were being overpaid?
