Jack Crane, a pathologist based in Northern Ireland, has spoken out about the harmful effects of the prescription painkiller, Tramadol.

In conversation with ITV News, Crane said that Tramadol has been linked to more deaths than any other drug, including deadly heroin and cocaine.

He is of the opinion that Tramadol should be specified as a Class A drug, i.e., the most harmful type of drug.

Speaking to the news outlet, Crane said:

“I don’t think that people realise how potentially risky taking Tramadol is.

I think it’s because it’s a prescription drug – people assume it’s safe”.

It is an opiate-based drug and is often prescribed to treat moderate to severe pain.

Crane drew attention to the fact that as many as 33 deaths in Northern Ireland had links to Tramadol and said urgent action needs to be taken.

The renowned pathologist is due to meet with the NI’s Chief Medical Officer this month to discuss his concerns.

There is a growing worry that Tramadol and other prescription drugs are becoming more accessible on the black market and so, these drugs are being abused.

It is important to note that Tramadol becomes increasingly more dangerous when mixed with alcohol.
