Large black plumes of smoke could be seen emanating from the harp-shaped bridge this morning.
Dublin’s iconic Samuel Beckett Bridge was forced to close briefly today (Thursday, 26 September) after a vehicle fire broke out.
Clips posted to social media that were captured this morning show large black plumes of smoke emanating from bright orange flames on the harp-shaped bridge as onlookers watched on.
In a statement at around 8.40am, statements were issued from An Garda Síochána and the Dublin City Council Traffic & Incident Management Centre (DCCTraffic) about the incident.
“Dublin Traffic Update: The Samuel Beckett Bridge is closed due to an incident. Local diversions are in place.” the Gardaí said.
While DCCTraffic added: “Due to an incident, Samuel Beckett Bridge is closed [on] both directions. DFB (Dublin Fire Brigade) on scene.”
Both Gardaí and Dublin Fire Brigade attended the fire, with the latter extinguishing the blaze.
“Firefighters have extinguished a vehicle fire on the Samuel Beckett Bridge. Expect delays in the area,” DFB wrote.
The northbound 1 lane and southbound lane on the bridge have since reopened, though DCC Traffic is advising motorists to drive with caution.
