An investigation has been launched after a 17-year-old girl was allegedly subjected to a violent sexual assault last weekend.

According to reports, the incident took place in Rathgoggin Middle, Charleville in the early hours of July 5th.

The Irish Examiner reports that the teenager was walking home from a birthday party in the town when she was raped and physically assaulted.

Superintendent Pat McCarthy of Mallow Garda Station said: “For a young person of that age, it was an horrific ordeal to be put through.

“She was on the way home from the town — it was between 2am and 3am. We are still investigating it and hopefully there will be developments shortly”.
