Cork City Council was the first in the country to vote in favour of gay marriage last night and what a vote it was.
The vote in favour of the Sinn Féin motion was passed unanimously and without debate according to numerous reports this morning.
While it is only one of the many steps required for the legalisation of gay marriage in Ireland, it is certainly a historical one.
It echoes a similar motion passed in the North by Belfast City Council where all parties also voted in favour of gay marriage.
Gay marriage is an issue that has been openly discussed in the public sphere in recent weeks, most notably by Tánaiste Eamon Gilmore who said it is time to have equality in this area.
We’d love to know what your opinion is on the legalisation of gay marriage in Ireland so why not leave us a comment?
