Computer firm Intel are to cut 12,000 jobs globally

Ellen Tannam

11% of all jobs at tech giant Intel are to be cut globally by mid-2017, it was announced today in a statement on the company’s website.

The slumping PC market is to blame, and the company aims to “accelerate evolution from a PC company to one that powers the cloud and billions of smart, connected computing devices”, by cutting the workforce down.

“These changes will result in the reduction of up to 12,000 positions globally — approximately 11 percent of employees — by mid-2017 through site consolidations worldwide, a combination of voluntary and involuntary departures, and a re-evaluation of programs. The majority of these actions will be communicated to affected employees over the next 60 days with some actions spanning into 2017.”

It is not yet clear how many of these cuts will affect the European HQ of the California tech giant, which employs over 4,000 people in Leixlip, Co. Kildare.
