A male carer in the UK has been jailed for four months after he was caught mistreating a 79-year-old woman on a camera installed by her son.

According to the Daily Mail, James Wright became concerned about his mother Gladys after hearing stories of elder abuse in homes and decided to install cameras in the dementia sufferer’s room. He was shocked to find that the footage showed a distressed Gladys being pushed, shoved and pulled, as well as being subjected to a “tirade of verbal abuse” and being called a “nasty aggressive bitch”.

Daniel Baynes (24) was shown attempting to force Mrs Wright’s eyes open and pushing the pensioner on to the bed before applying his weight on her legs to hold her down.

Wright brought the footage to the police and Baynes, as well as two of his co-workers, pleaded guilty to the abuse. He was sentenced to four months behind bars after admitting three counts of ill treatment or neglect of a person who lacks capacity, and another of theft after he was caught stealing Mrs Wright’s food.

“You were employed as carers. This was in breach of a most basic duty of care and humanity which you had all undertaken to perform. Nothing about her behaviour or the environment in which you worked excuses your behaviour against a very vulnerable patient in your care,” said Judge Michael Longman.
