The Irish Independent reports that Bishop Denis Brennan, the bishop of Ferns, made a plea to his flock earlier this week and asked them to pray for our wet summer to end.
Yes, somewhere down in Wexford, men, women and children have been praying their backsides off just so you can enjoy the sun today. Well done Wexford, we really appreciate it.
So what caused the bishop to make such an unusual request from his parishioners? Apparently the bishop was touched after he met a local farmer who told him that the poor weather was having an adverse effect on farming.
The farmer then asked the bishop to say a prayer for him, because “we all need a prayer sometimes.”
“Our real thoughts and prayers are with the farming community at this time. I am very conscious of the vital role it plays in our society and our economy,” said Bishop Brennan.
“This persistently poor weather is a real threat to crops and livelihoods,” he added.
The bishop went on to publish a prayer that people can say, which includes the words “may the harvest be saved.”
So the next time the sky starts to cloud over, it might be best to mutter a few Hail Mary’s – you never know. It could actually help…
