*Warning* Article mentions baby loss and miscarriage
Many women have been speaking out about being 'childless' after J.D Vance's grim remarks about 'childless cat ladies' resurfaced this week.
Being child-free, whether by choice or not, is a deeply personal issue. Some women choose not to have children, but others face harrowing fertility struggles that prevent them from starting families of their own.
Others will suffer miscarriages and baby loss, a grief you can't even begin to understand.
Speaking out about this loss is unfathomable. How some people find the strength to discuss it is beyond but it's something to be admired and valued.
This week, rugby player Andrew Porter and his wife Elaine confirmed they sadly suffered a miscarriage.
Elaine shared the harrowing personal news on Instagram this week after responding to JD Vance's controversial comments about women who do not have children.
In 2019, Vance made a harsh remark about ‘childless cat ladies’ when discussing Kamala Harris.
“We’re effectively run in this country, via the Democrats, and via our corporate oligarchs, by a bunch of childless cat ladies, who are miserable about their own lives and the choices that they’ve made,” he told Tucker Carlson at the time.
Speaking out about the harrowing comments, Elaine they hurt a lot because she lost her baby.
"As someone who has experienced a miscarriage, this is absolutely disgusting.
"Women are SO much more than their ability to give birth. Vile," she wrote.
Following her post, Elaine thanked her followers for being so kind and supportive.
She said many of them shared their own personal stories with her and sent her love to those in similar situations to her.
"Thank you for so much love on my story... sharing that I've had a miscarriage is absolutely never something I thought I'd share on my Instagram but I thought it was so important to speak out against small-minded men who think they have a say on women’s bodies and choices.
"So many messages coming through of people in similar positions and I’m so sorry to anyone who has experienced the same, sending love," she added.
Women like Elaine are going to make a major difference by speaking about miscarriage and baby loss, but it's important to value her bravery and ensure anyone speaking out knows they're not alone and that we're there with them.
