Despite everything else that happened over the past twelve months, it’s safe to say that 2012 was the year of Psy. Or, more specifically, it was the year we all became obsessed with a little song known as Gangnam Style.
In fact, our obsession with the song was/is so powerful that the music video has become the first ever YouTube clip to reach over one billion views.
Yes, you heard us: ONE BILLION VIEWS.
This achievement comes a mere 27 days after Psy’s video for Gangnam Style broke Justin Bieber’s record of 803 million views for his hit single Baby.
So to put it all into perspective, this means that Gangnam Style has recieved an average of 6.5 million views per day for nearly four weeks solid. Woah, right? You can’t deny that those statistics are a little mindblowing.
You want to hear something even crazier? Gangnam Style was posted on YouTube back in July of this year. Justin Bieber’s video for Baby was posted in February 2010. Despite this, projections estimate that Justin’s Baby video won’t surpass the one billion views mark until 2014!
Psy has taken the world by storm since he released Gangnam Style
“In 2012, I experienced so many things; it’s been a tremendous year, but to accomplish this, it’s really something that stands out,” said Psy, speaking to MTV.
“Because it all began with YouTube, and to have [the vide] reach one billion views… I don’t think even I can break that record!” he added.
Well, not unless you come up with another dance move that can rival the epic ‘horse trot’ from the Gangnam Style video Psy…
Anyway, last week Gangnam Style was named YouTube’s top viral video of the year. Speaking about the success of the clp, YouTube said that the “velocity of popularity for Psy’s outlandish video is unprecedented.”
“Honestly, when I made this video I didn’t even expect 1 million views, because this is off my sixth album in Korea, so I just hoped it would be huge there,” said Psy.
Who knew pretending to ride an invisible horse would end up being so popular?
