Proof that social media is an incredibly powerful tool…
Shawn Mendes started his music career by posting six-second clips of cover songs to Vine and within months became a force to be reckoned with.
The 15-year-old Canadian, who is now signed to the prestigious Island records, released his debut EP online and managed to take the coveted top spot on iTunes after just 37 minutes.
Mendes, who is now beginning to enjoy mainstream success as a singer-songwriter, has a massive following, with almost 3 million followers on Vine and 1.45 million on Twitter.
Mendes, who may now be possibly crowned the king of social media, took to his YouNow.com last night to conduct a live stream of his debut EP before asking fans, “let’s get this bad boy to No. 1”.
As the saying goes, ‘ask and you shall receive’, Mendes fanatics did their very best to ensure their idol claimed the top spot and the hashtag #ShawnToNumber1 became a top trending topic on the Twittersphere.
In a recent interview with Mashable, Mendes told the website: “I posted a six-second clip of me singing ‘As Long As You Love Me’ by Justin Bieber in August and it was an overnight sort of explosion,”
“When I woke up and I had 10,000 likes on that video, I was like, ‘What is going on?’ Social media is taking off. It’s an entire new world out there.”
This is the future of music, people… excuse us while we have a rest, we’re feeling slightly old.
