The Meteor Choice Music Awards were held last night in Dublin’s Vicar Street and proved that the Irish music scene is still alive and well. Delorentos, the odds on favourites, took home the biggest award of the evening, coveted Meteor Choice Music Prize for Best Album for 2012.
The band, who were formed in Dublin in 2005, were previously nominated for the award in 2007. Since their humble beginnings, they have become an Irish household name and have been tipped by critics as one of the best bands working in Ireland at the moment.
The winners took home a well-deserved cheque for €10,000, provided by the Irish Music Rights Organisation and the Irish Recorded Music Association, as well as a beautifully commissioned award for the event.
Delorentos also performed live on stage for the event as did eight of the other shortlist acts including Damien Dempsey, Julie Feeney and the critically lauded Heathers.
The other winner on the night was Gavin James who won Irish Song of the Year for Say Hello. The Dublin based singer took the prize over The Coronas, Glen Hansard, The Script and The Villagers. Unlike the Best Album award, Best Song was chosen by the public on the Meteor Facebook site or by texting to vote.
The Meteor Choice Music Awards have been criticised in the past for making unpopular decisions, most notably Cathy Davey not winning in 2007, but they seem to have got it right here!
