There are a few Irish acts tipped for great things in 2014, however there’s one band we have our money on to make huge waves in the country’s music scene, Dublin based group, the Mighty Stef.
The Mighty Stef may have begun back in 06′ as a solo endeavour from founding member Stefan Murphy, but thanks to Gary Lonergan, Brian Gallagher and Brian Farrell joining ship, the four-piece are now an indie-rock force to be reckoned with.
Known for their simplistic song writing, the lads draw on personal triumphs and woes, commentaries on the world that surrounds them, and works of pure and utter fantasy that interchange seamlessly and beautifully.
Their sound has been described as a euphoric rock n roll, blended with a little gothic, folk and electronic elements.

Last year the group embarked on the challenge of conquering a more ‘mainstream’ audience, something that seems to have paid off.
After a string of exciting live performances, garnering the lads a following from the European and American underground scene, they returned home to a sell-out three night residency in the Whelan’s upstair room in November. The Mighty Stef are back at the famous Dublin venue on the 31st of January, and this time they’re headlining Whelan’s main room.
The band kicked off the year with a brand new track, ‘Nightwatchman Of The Iveagh Flats’, the second single from their fourth EP, Iveagh Flats.
Iveagh Flats was recorded early last year in Los Angeles, and produced by Queens Of The Stone Age’s Alain Johannes.
The first single from the three-song EP, ‘Vampire, Hold Me Tonight’, was penned in the wake of the friend’s death and is noted by the band as a, “reluctant but catchy pop single.” A reluctantly catchy pop song that we happen to love.

Tickets for their Whelan’s gig on the 31st January can be purchased from Ticketmaster.ie and MCD.ie.
Until next week we’ll leave you with another one of our favourites from the Mighty Stef, a beautiful acoustic version of ‘A Song For A Blind Girl’.
If you spot a few fangirls at the front of the Whelan’s stage that will more than likely be us, so do say hello.
