Get That Off The TV – Nine Music Videos That Have Been Banned

Some are understandable, others are a bit crazy... *Warning - Some content might be offensive.

Sue Murphy

We can all admit that the moment someone reveals that something is forbidden or banned, our ears immediately prick up and we begin to take an interest. It’s just human nature. It is like that moment when Dougal is on the plane and asked not to press the big red button, we simply must do it. This is often how these videos, often for ridiculous songs, become so well known.

1. Elvis – Hound Dog on Ed Sullivan

Elvis was definitely trying to lead us astray…

2. Michael Jackson – Black or White

Objections were raised to the dance sequence at the end of the video, and so Jackson’s video was banned from tv.

3. Prodigy – Smack My Bitch Up

MTV and various networks got together to make sure this video did not hit the airwaves, mainly due to the fact that they considered it endorsing domestic violence.

4. Motley Crue – Girls, Girls, Girls

Banned due to the amount of nudity, Motley Crue’s video was shot in a strip club. They were asking for it really…

5. Madonna – Like A Prayer

Madonna is no stranger to banned videos but she really came under fire with what was considered a particularly blasphemous production. Those burning crosses didn’t go down too well.

6. Rihanna – S&M

Another popstar who is a friend of the banned videos is Rihanna. S &M was banned in 11 countries!

7. Lady Gaga – Alejandro

Almost in a nod to Madonna, Alejandro received an after 10pm restriction from MTV.

8. Nine Inch Nails – Closer

This is even the edited version of the track…

9. Garth Brooks – Thunder Rolls

Due to its theme of domestic violence, Brooks video was banned from tvs. The song still documents what happens to a husband who eventually gets his comeuppance for abusing his wife, but it is almost impossible to get a hold of.
