According to new research from DoneDeal.ie, almost six in 10 Irish consumers have said that if they had to drive one car for the rest of their lives it would be one produced in Germany.
The survey found that 57% of respondents believe that Germany produces the best cars with Japan in second place on 31%. The trust in German cars was expanded upon with 16% of respondents saying that Audi was the car they would pick if they had to drive one car brand for the rest of their life followed by BMW, Volkswagen and Mercedes all on 12%. Toyota flew the flag for Japan with 14%. The most searched for car brand on the website in September was BMW and Volkswagen Golfs were the type of car that sold the most.
Commenting on the research, Cathal Cremen, Commercial Manager from DoneDeal said, “Volkswagen is the most popular car brand placed on our site and is the most popular car in 16 counties in Ireland. This is followed by Toyota in every other county except Laois and Offaly whose favourite car brand is Ford.
“Our top four searched for terms in the car section are; ‘BMW’, ‘Golf’, ‘Passat’ and ‘Audi A4’ respectively. It seems the cliché about German engineering being the best holds true with people in Ireland.”
The survey also revealed some interesting observations made about what people get up to in their cars. More than seven in 10 (71%) have spotted motorists picking their nose in their cars. An even higher number (76%) have spotted motorists fixing their hair and make-up in their vehicles and being vain by checking themselves out in the mirror (75%). When it comes to relieving stress after a tough day at the office the survey found that 72% of people in Ireland love to sing in the car to help calm down after a stressful day.
When questioned on their favourite famous cars, 61% of those surveyed cited the indestructible Toyota Hilux from Top Gear as their favourite. The nearest rival to the Hilux was Mr Bean’s Mini getting 19% of the vote. This was followed by Del Boy Trotter’s three-wheeler Reliant Regal Van and the notorious Fiat Cinquecento owned by Simon from “The Inbetweeners” both garnering 8% of the vote.
