Your Own Bed and a Proper Cup of Tea – The 8 Things We’re Happiest to Come Home to After Holidays

Put some spuds on there, will you?

Rebecca McKnight

It’s grand to go, but it’s good to get home too! Now put on the kettle…

Home comforts are little joys of life often underestimated until they’re unavailable, like when you’re enjoying a week in the sun but can’t get a decent cup of tea to save your life. A new survey, carried out by Avonmore, has revealed that half of Irish holiday makers are more concerned about having no milk in the fridge when returning home to Ireland from a summer holiday than they are about lost car keys, dead plants in the garden or not being able to find their car in the car park.

The research also unveils some of the things we miss most when we are away from Ireland on holidays. Topping the list:

  1. Own Bed – 56%
  2. Proper cup of tea – 39%
  3. Fresh Irish Milk – 30%
  4. Sense of humour – 22%
  5. A full Irish breakfast – 20%
  6. Irish potatoes – 17%
  7. Sliced pan – 12%
  8. Their ‘mammy’s’ cooking – 9%

With 9% of us claiming to miss ‘mammys cooking’ – who better to trust to ensure your fridge is stocked up while away on holiday as 56% of returning holiday makers opted for their mum while one in four (28%) would place full faith in their neighbour. Pauline McLynn, famously known for her role as Mrs. Doyle in Father Ted is the celebrity that people would most trust to stock their fridge with fresh Irish milk. One in ten (10%) of us returning form a summer holiday would trust her more than rugby ace Brian O’Driscoll (4%) or Bono (2%) to fulfil the task.

To celebrate the love of a decent cuppa and fresh milk in the fridge, Avonmore are giving away 20,000 litres of free milk to returning holiday makers in Dublin airport this summer. So, keep an eye out for a text message when you land and pick up your free carton of Avonmore milk in Spar in the arrivals hall.

Commenting at the launch, Christine O’Brien, Product Group Manager said “The Irish really are a nation of milk lovers; we drink more milk than any other country in the world so it’s one of the things that we miss most when we’re away.  At Avonmore we know this, so we’re giving away 20,000 litres of milk when people arrive back in the airport – so they can head straight home, put the kettle on and their feet up!”
