People have taken to Twitter in response to the stabbings and shootings which took place in California this weekend.
Elliot Rodger, who killed six people, posted a video on YouTube explaining that he was seeking revenge because he had been forced by women to live “an existence of loneliness, rejection and unfulfilled desires”.
This sparked a reaction online with thousands of people tweeting under the #YesAllWomen hashtag (originally intended as a response to male rights activists’ complaints) about their opinions and experiences.
Here are just a few of the messages…
I shouldn’t have to hold my car keys in hand like a weapon & check over my shoulder every few seconds when I walk at night #YesAllWomen

Oh I’m sorry, does a hashtag campaign threaten you? Yeah, well we feel the same way about rape culture. #YesAllWomen — Angela Cobb (@angelacobb) May 25, 2014
#YesAllWomen Because feminism isn’t a dirty word. Equality is where the craic is. — Tara Flynn (@TaraFlynn) May 25, 2014
#YesAllWomen because when I get angry by a sexist comment, I shouldn’t be told ‘boys will be boys’ or ‘someone’s on their period’

“I have a boyfriend” is the easiest way to get a man to leave you alone. Because he respects another man more than you. #yesallwomen

Because as a man who writes feminist articles, I’ve never received death or rape threats. My female colleagues? EVERY DAY. #YesAllWomen
