‘Woke’ and ‘hygge’ added to the Oxford English Dictionary

The dictionary is very up-to-date.

Anna O'Rourke

Are you a ‘woke’ bae?

If so, you may be pleased to hear that the term has been added to the Oxford English Dictionary.

For the uninformed, this use of the word ‘woke’ doesn’t have anything to do with sleep, but refers to “being ‘aware’ or ‘well informed’ in a political or cultural sense,” according to its new dictionary entry.

The word has grown in use because of its association with political and social movements in the past few years, such a s Black Lives Matter.

Danish word hygge has also made it into the dictionary.

The word has no direct translation in English but relates to the concepts of cosiness or happiness. It recently became popular as a lifestyle trend outside of Denmark.

Another new words to have been added to the Oxford English Dictionary include ‘post-truth’, which is defined as “relating to or denoting circumstances in which objective facts are less influential in shaping political debate or public opinion than appeals to emotion and personal belief.”
