Alright ladies, how many of you are handy with a pair of knitting needles? Whether you’re an expert at the old ‘knit two, purl one’ or your only knowledge of knitting is the fact that you know what those sticks you use are called (answer: they’re called needles), here’s something everyone can get involved in and best of all? It’s for a great, great cause.

Scrumptious smoothie brand Innocent have once again teamed up with Age Action for their annual Big Knit campaign. Running from now until the end of November, the Big Knit campaign is all about knitting up a storm and raising money for Age Action Ireland – the nation’s biggest charity for the elderly.

What does it involve? Well basically all you have to do is grab a ball of wool, some needles and start knitting little hats for Innocent bottles. The woolly hats will sit on the tops of the bottles and be sold in shops nationwide, and for every woolly hatted smoothie sold, Innocent will give 25 cent to Age Action Ireland to help keep older people warm during winter.

Knit your own woolly bottle hat and help raise some money for charity.

Since 2008, this hat-knitting-fest has risen over €60,000 for Age Action and more than 180,000 hats have been knitted. This year, Innocent is urging everyone to cast on and knit 80,000 hats to raise €20,000.

“We have up to 2,000 excess winter deaths in Ireland each year. They do not die from hyperthermia, but from cardiovascular and respiratory illness – cold-related conditions. They die because they cannot afford to heat their homes to a safe level,” said Eamon Timmons of Age Action Ireland.

“The money raised from the Innocent big knit will help address this crisis by enabling our volunteers visit more older people in their homes to carry out some DIY jobs and ensure they are well. It will also help fund our annual winter warmth public education campaign which informs people how they can stay well, warm and healthy at home,” he added.
