Live television is a fragile beast.
One tiny slip up and a whole programme can be ruined so you would think that presenters of live TV programmes would be well equipped to deal with the unexpected.
But, as yesterday’s episode of Today on RTÉ One showed, sometimes even experienced presenters can lose focus during a live broadcast.
Discussing the horsemeat scandal, panellist Eleanor Tiernan chose the opportune moment –live on air – to vocalise her grievances with butchers.
But, it isn’t the meat she has an issue with… it’s the way the young rogues have sexually charged banter with the aul wans who frequent their shops!
Turning to presenters Maura Derrane and Dáithí Ó Sé, Tierney said: “I live in Dublin 8 in Dublin and I find the butchers a very intimidating atmosphere actually, I find it very sexually charged
“I don’t know if you’ve noticed this but some of the banter that goes on between some of the younger butchers and the older women – it’s bordering on obscene in this country. You know, it’s all about sausages, it’s disgusting I think.”
Understandably, both Maura and Dáithí were shocked and appalled. But what the viewers didn’t know is that Eleanor is actually a stand-up comedian… so she was obviously joking!
Poor Dáithí just didn’t get it, bless him. Maybe he was too distracted thinking of all those sausages.
