When you arrive home with frozen fingers, icy toes and a nose a chilly as a dog’s, a warm bowl of comfort food is often desired and a new study reveals that we have already ditched the salads in favourite of bubbling soups, stews and casseroles to ward off the cold.

The study, carried out by Knorr, revealed that 60 per cent of people shiver home on their chilly commute dreaming about their favourite winter dinner, spaghetti bolognese.

Over half of us love nothing more than tucking into a warm casserole as the rain batters the windows outside and other favourites such as curry, chilli and lasange also top the list.

During winter, we become increasingly lazy foodies with 50 per cent of us preferring to knock up one-pot wonders to save on washing up.

Marco Pierre White explained why we crave comfort so much during the cold weather.

Celebrity chef Marco Pierre White is the face of Knorr

“We all start to crave hearty, warming food around the time when the clocks go back – as sales of Knorr have shown this is the time of year when people start making comfort food.”

“I’ve always loved one pot dishes – they’re warming, cost-effective, easy and always delicious – especially when using high quality stock.

“It’s no wonder the nation has started to embrace this simple but effective method of cooking,” he said.

One-pot wonders are often the cheaper alternative and 60 per cent of us admit that cash flow problems are the reason we are turning to cheaper, hearty food.

Her.ie has a pound of mince in our fridge today, so we think it is the perfect evening for our favourite Italian treat. You can’t beat a bowl of steaming spag bol, can you?

What is your favourite one pot wonder?
