We Are Never Getting Back Together: The 10 Best Break-Up Anthems

When you're feeling sad, frustrated, heartbroken and angry, there's nothing better than belting out a few of these sympathetic songs...

Her

Break-ups. We don’t even need to tell you how awful they are. As soon as someone utter the words “we need to talk” you get that sinking feeling in your stomach and you just know that it’s all downhill after that…

So how do you get over a break-up? Do you slum it in your pyjamas for a few days? Do you immediately hit the town with your best friends? Do you wallow in a tub of Ben & Jerry’s, watch The Notebook and weep every time Noah (God bless him) does something awesome for Allie, like build her a freakin’ house?!

However you get over your heartache, we bet there is one thing you have in common with every other woman in the world: music.

Yes, there are a few universal break-up anthems out there and given that January is the time of year when couples are most likely to part ways (according to a recent survey) we thought it was only fitting to count down our ten favourite end-of-relationship songs.

______________

10. “Don’t Hold Your Breath” – Nicole Scherzinger

Love is gone, face the facts – a bad movie ends and the screen fades to black.

It’s catchy, it’s upbeat and it has some seriously empowering lyrics to help you shake off your slump and realise that hell yes, you definitely did deserve better.

9. “Since U Been Gone” – Kelly Clarkson

I’m so moving on, yeah yeah, thanks to you now I get what I want, since you’ve been gone.

When it comes to break-ups, everyone goes through a few stages. There’s heartache, acceptance, anger and finally freedom. This song sums up the final stage, when you start to realise just how much better off you actually are.

8. “Someone Like You” – Adele

Never mind I’ll find someone like you, I wish nothing but the best for you too.

Sometimes it takes awhile for us to reach the ‘empowering’ stages after a break-up. Until you get there, howl along with Adele and release all your pain via the medium of this song. It’s seriously therapeutic and you’ll feel loads better afterwards. Trust us.

7. “Gives You Hell” – All American Rejects

And truth be told I miss you. And truth be told I’m lying.

Need something a little cheerful to help you forget about how upset you are? Give this a few listens and then make it the new ringtone for your ex, just in case he comes crawling back.

6. “Up Out My Face (Remix)” – Mariah Carey featuring Nicki Minaj

I ain’t walking around all mopey and sad, they’re collecting my bags baby.

Before Mariah and Nicki started hating each other on American Idol, they released this song together which is perfect if you’re currently going through a break-up. Listen, sing and thank your lucky stars that you now have another chance to find Prince Charming.

5. “I Don’t Need a Man” – Pussy Cat Dolls

I don’t need a ring around my finger to make me feel complete.

This is a turn-it-up-and-dance-around-your-bedroom-singing-into-a-hairbrush type of song. Crank it up, sing your heart out and shake your booty. It’s one way to stop your heartache.

4. “Independent Woman” – Destiny’s Child

Tell me how you feel about this: try to control me boy you get dismissed.

Are you an independent woman? Throw your hands up and listen to this anthem on repeat.

3. “We Are Never Getting Back Together” – Taylor Swift

I’m telling you, I’m telling you we are never, ever, ever getting back together.

Judging from her epic list of exes, Taylor is a lady who knows how to go through a break-up and make it out the other side. When you’re starting to get over your ex, this is the perfect song to help you quash any thoughts of texting him or calling him.

2. “You Oughta Know” – Alanis Morissette

And every time I scratch my nails down someone else’s back I hope you feel it.

Are you angry about how things ended between you and your ex? Rather than ringing him up and tearing him a new one, channel all your frustration into belting this song out in your bedroom.

1. “I Will Survive” – Gloria Gaynor

Go on now go, walk out the door, don’t turn around now cause you’re not welcome anymore.

We don’t think this amazing song from Gloria Gaynor needs much explanation. It was the original break-up anthem and it’s still going strong today. We love it!
