In our brand new series, our resident sports fanatic Mary takes on some of Ireland’s top female athletes to see if she has what it takes to compete with the best.
From chatting about their rigorous training programmes to taking us on to the pitch and right into the middle of the action, some of Ireland’s biggest names show Her.ie how it’s done.
Last week, we took on some of Ireland’s champion fencers this week, we went head-to-head with Monaghan Senior Ladies Football team…

Mary says…
As a GAA fanatic, I thought going training with Monaghan ladies would be tough, but not the most difficult thing in the world.
Oh, how wrong I was!
Reassured at the start that it was going to be a ‘light session’, I would hate to see what they consider to be a ‘tough’ session as I nearly passed out after the warm-up alone!
With girls travelling from all over the country to make training in the pouring rain and freezing conditions, the session truly highlighted the hard work and dedication that goes on behind the scenes for ladies teams around Ireland.
Respect ladies.
Thanks to the girls and all the crew in Monaghan for their encouragement from the off… despite the fact that I couldn’t kick a ball straight!
