Everyone’s favourite Rose of Tralee, Maria Walsh, is hitting the road this week on behalf of three fantastic Irish charities – and we’re coming with her every step of the way!
The Trek2Tralee is in full swing, with Maria and her team making their way from her home town of Shrule, Co. Mayo to Tralee’s world-famous Denny Street.
The gang are running, walking and cycling the 242 kilometre trek to the Kingdom before arriving at Denny Street on Friday afternoon.
There’s already been a fantastic turn out along the way, with people joining in towns and villages on the route.
Trek2Tralee is raising important funds for three fantastic Irish charities; Barretstown, Donal Walsh #LiveLife and Development Perspectives.
Each of these causes offers Irish people the chance to become empowered through themselves as individuals and within their communities.
Today we’re taking a closer look at Development Perspectives, one of the charities benefiting from the money raised during Trek2Tralee.
Development Perspectives is an Irish NGO tackling the root cause of poverty, inequality and climate change through education and active global citizenship.
In Ireland, Development Perspectives undertakes a wide range of work including: providing high quality Development Education opportunities for adults and young people; engaging groups of people in programmes to bring about a deeper knowledge of Development challenges and to implement effective actions to lessen poverty and inequality; and building leadership capacity within communities through educational opportunities, so people can become more socially entrepreneurial, innovative, sustainable, healthy and resilient.
Abroad, the charity works in collaboration with similar charities in Tanzania, Uganda, Liveria and Zambia to share learning and exchanges.
Through its Insight programme participants get the opportunity to view the world differently by learning in different environments with groups of people from diverse backgrounds. The impact of this is deep and profound, with many people realising that irrespective of where you live, you can effect the global through local actions.
