VIDEO: Going The Distance – Touching Documentary About Ultra Distance Runner Diagnosed With Cancer

An extraordinary man.

Her

Maurice Mullins was diagnosed with prostate cancer when he was 64, a disease that put an end to his lifelong passion, running.

Now aged 71, Maurice is determined to compete again, so his daughter Deirdre decided to shoot this award-winning short documentary, ‘Going the Distance’, touching on what “drives him to face his darkest days with optimism and humour.”

In the 12 minute short film we get to see many sides of Maurice; the runner, the philosopher, the father, the friend and the entertainer.

The video description reads: “Maurice’s story is a simple one – he just wants to run again. Through this straight narrative the film explores how he draws parallels between his years of sports training to how he copes with undergoing chemotherapy. The film brings the viewer face to face with the question of how we will respond when confronted with adversity, with our own mortality and with the loss of our greatest love or passion.”

The piece has picked up the ‘Audience Award’ at Dingle International Film Festival and selected for the Stranger than Fiction Documentary Film Festival in 2013.
