Holidays are the best of times given that you have nothing more pressing to do than lie on a beach, cocktail and book in hand, but in case you haven’t had time to get away this summer here are a few of the season’s must reads. Stock up on chocolate and put the kettle on as these books are unputdownable.
Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn
Gone Girl has been signed up for a big screen adaptation so you’re going to want to read up before watching the film. Weidenfeld & Nicholson, the British publisher, have described Gone Girl “as a smart book, not candy floss.” The relationship theme is a tired one but American author Gillian Flynn takes things to new extremes by exaggerating every little squabble. It appears Nick and Amy Dunne are happily married but then Amy disappears on their fifth anniversary. When the police arrive, they discover a secret mobile phone and signs of a struggle. We won’t say anymore but from this point it’s pretty hard put it down… and bear in mind there’s a BIG twist.
Mad About You by Sinead Moriarty
This is the fourth book charting the chaotic lives of the Hamilton family. In this instalment, Emma, James and their two children have moved to London so that James can take up a new post as rugby coach. The move brings many stresses as Emma struggles to find a suitable school for the kids, a job for herself and most importantly a nanny to help out when she’s at work. Little does she realise things are about to get much worse! Mad About You has a light hearted tone while dealing with a serious subject which happens to be this Irish author’s speciality.
The Cuckoo’s Calling by JK Rowling (published under the pseudonym Robert Galbraith)
Miles away from Hogwarts, this is a gripping mystery and ideal if you want a meaty fast-paced read. When a model falls to her death from a balcony in Mayfair, people assume it was suicide. Her brother is doubtful and calls in private investigator Cormoran Strike. As a war veteran, Strike is both physically and psychologically wounded but the case gives him much needed financial assistance. The plot quickly thickens and danger is never far from his door…
Deep Blue Sea by Tasmina Perry
Perry transports us to another world with her gritty storylines, interesting characters and vivid descriptions. Toeing the line between chick lit and a darker genre, we can’t get enough of her writing. Deep Blue Sea introduces us to Diana and Julian Denver whose lives appear perfect from the outside. Tragedy strikes, and we soon learn all is not what it seems. Diana is reunited with her estranged sister Rachel, opening up Pandora’s box, and you’ll just have to read to find out what happens next…
