Time to Travel: Four Great Mini Break Suggestions to Check out

Feel like a few days holidays? We have it all figured out for you.

Cathy Donohue

It’s that time of year when many of us start to get itchy feet; your summer holiday is all but a distant memory while Christmas holidays feel years away.

What to do but escape on a few days mini break! The key here is cheap and cheerful. If you’re going to an expensive city, Paris for example, then budgeting is essential whereas if you choose a cheaper location you may have more cash to splash.

Antwerp, Belgium

Home of designer Ann Demeulemeester, Antwerp is fast making a name as the style spot of Europe. It’s a great choice if you want to veer away from the predictable and this gem won’t stay secret for long. The restaurants are top rate, its designer shops enjoy international standing and music is an important part of life here. Oh, and the beer is good too! Fashion followers must visit Antwerp’s’ mode museum Momu where the experimental exhibits are changed every six months.

Paris, France

Yes we know it’s predictable but it’s truly gorgeous too. Majestic gold accented buildings, romantic views, multiple landmarks to visit and as many croissants as you can eat. From Disneyland to The Louvre there is something for everyone, no matter what your taste. If you feel like a break from the busy city, visit Île St Louis complete with riverbanks and quaint shops. It’s the ideal place to relax with a Berthillon ice cream cone, the best ice cream in Paris.

Ah, the city of love!

Istanbul, Turkey

Sun, sea and sand is always a winner and the temperatures in Istanbul are still scorching for this time of year. The Istanbul Biennal, the region’s largest contemporary event, returns for its 13th instalment from 14 September until 10 November. Honing up on your culture knowledge while bronzing on the beach… now this does sound good. One of the most enjoyable activities is to take a night-time Bosphorus ferry where you can enjoy the views back to the Old City.

Gothenburg, Sweden

Tucked away in a corner of Sweden, this quaint city is an undiscovered treasure. A buzzing café scene found on cobbled streets, picturesque canals and there are also beautiful parks to take relaxing strolls. Coastal Gothenburg is the country’s culinary capital of 2012 so foodies will not be disappointed. Röda Sten is a must see, a very cool art centre where entertainment is key. Live music, club nights and stand-up comedy are just some of the events on offer, not to mention the hippest art installations around.

For an arty experience try Gothenburg
