When philanthropist Carol Suchman came across a toy shop available to let in New Yorks West Village, she had an inspiring idea.
Every year Suchman donates hundreds of toys to homeless shelters but this year she saw the opportunity to take it one step further.
She contacted the owner of Hudson Party Store and proposed buying everything inside. Suchman tells NY1 News; “We talked and negotiated and bought the entire toy store,” she said.
Suchman bought the contents of the store and began organizing them into parcels. She bagged it all up and donated it to the city’s Department of Homeless Services.
“I’ve been doing this for many years and we have many generous sponsors,” Antonio Rodriquez, director of special events at DHS, told NY1 News. “But I have to say, that this is the first time anybody ever bought out an entire store and donated it.”
Suchman and her husband once owned a successful tech company which funds the pair’s philanthropic donations.
“Children is always my focus,” she said. “So that’s why, a lot of foster kids get a lot of used things and I realized a lot of them never had a birthday gift that they actually wanted.
“I know everyone can use a gift around the holidays.”
