This Little Boy Forgoes Birthday Presents So He Can Help Feed Needy Children

What a guy.

Cathy Donohue

William Winslow is a pretty special eight-year-old.

He’s doing his utmost to eradicate childhood hunger in his community of Raleigh, North Carolina, by holding food drives and asking for donations to the cause instead of birthday presents.

So far this year, William’s food drive collected enough food and money to keep at least 16 kids fed for an entire year, his mother Blythe Clifford told The Huffington Post.

It all began when the little boy found out about BackPack Buddies: a hunger-relief program run by Inter-Faith Food Shuttle, from a guidance counselor at school.

His first food drive, in February 2013, raised $305 (€371) and collected 1,400 pounds of food.

This year, William’s second annual food drive took place last weekend, with four grocery shops and a restaurant taking part.

With the help of his parents and around 50 volunteers, William gathered 3,335 pounds of food and more than $3,000 (€3,647) in donations, so far.

“He wants to help feed hungry kids and he expects others to help him. I don’t think he gets how inspiring he is or how incredible it is to be so empathetic at such a young age, ” said Blythe.
