A survey has revealed how much women expect their partners to spend on their engagement ring.

On average they believe that they should be spending around €1,100.

The study of 2,000 women, who have yet to be asked the big question, also shows that the proposal should take place after two years of dating.

When asked what way they wanted the proposal to happen, the most popular choice was for them to get down on one knee in a private setting, but shouldn’t necessarily ask for the dad’s permission first.

When it comes to the actual ring, three quarters of women the women surveyed admitted that they would like to pick out their own engagement ring.

The most popular type of ring is a solitaire (round) cut diamond on a white gold band.

Craig Bolton, Executive Director from jeweller Mappin & Webb, who commissioned the study, said:

“The winter and Christmas period is a very popular time of year for proposals to take place, so if any men or women are thinking of popping the question now’s the time to do it.”

“A happy marriage starts with a happy proposal, and the ring is something that absolutely has to be perfect – whether it’s a flawless stone or a bespoke ring with some personal meaning to the couple.”
