This Girl’s Reaction to Hair Dye Is Terrifying

Make sure you consult a professional before trying new products

Cassie Delaney

As irritating as the patch test can be, we now fully appreciate its importance. Hairdressers have warned us for years that we should test new products slightly before we undergo any sort of transformation.

Unfortunately one girl didn’t complete the necessary step and suffered a massive reaction to the dye. Her pal, reddit user the_chosen_ginger , decided to document the reaction to warn other hair dye aficionadas.

The reaction was probably the result of Paraphenylenediamine (PPD). PPD is a chemical substance found in most dark cosmetics, temporary tattoos, oils, greases and petrol. It’s included in hair dye as is produces a natural looking finish and allows the hair to be washed and shampooed without fading.

PPD hair dyes usually come packaged as 2 bottles, one containing the PPD dye preparation and the other containing the developer or oxidizer. PPD is a colourless substance that requires oxygen for it to become coloured.

The reaction pictures below is a symptom of an extreme reaction to PPD. Minor reactions include dermatitis and itchiness of the scalp.

Make sure you consult a professional before trying new products at home.

So, my friend had a pretty ridiculous allergic reaction to hair dye…
