A bizarre online trend has sparked interest and controversy across the US as young women post faceless photos of their boobs to show their solidarity and support for a college basketball team.

It all started with a Twitter account asking for Kansas University students to submit pictures of their boobs to support the KU basketball team.

How does this make sense? We don’t know, but thousands of American college students have joined the trend.

It has since spread to a Facebook page with nearly 13,000 likes, a Pinterest page with 58 pins of KU boob photos, a Tumblr and its very own hashtag #Boobment on Twitter.

It has also sparked similar college sports boob Twitter accounts for dozens of schools across the States including ones for Michigan State, Miami University, University of Florida, University of Tennessee and University of Georgia, amongst others.

The original KU account has nearly 25,000 followers on Twitter and a very active community.

The account’s mission statement.

After reporting on the bizarre trend, Buzzfeed received a statement from Ken Soap, one of the students involved with @KUBoobs. He wrote:

“It’s been a great pleasure to see so many new KU fans popping up across the globe. We never anticipated it to happen at every college across the country overnight, in what has come to be known as the #boobment. We welcome and encourage all schools to join the #boobment. Except Missouri. We don’t like Missouri.”

How mature. And just for you Ken, basketball isn’t the reason people are getting involved.

“There has been an increased demand for merchandise like t-shirts and calendars so we’ll likely venture into that area soon. It’s all in the hands of the fans! I listen to what they want and do my best to make it happen,” Soap added.

Girls have had no problem posting photos of their chest to the hashtag.

Think before you tweet girls…
